Steffen began his career as an apprentice, working with R. Messing, C.O. Dürrschmidt and R.H. Leicht. He achieved his Master diploma in 1988 and opened his own workshop founded in 1989. He has also been a lecturer at the university of applied arts (Musical instruments manufacture) in Markneukirchen.
